Preparing Global Citizens: International Baccalaureate® Diploma Programme
Learn how Central High School’s IB Programme prepares students to be engaged, well-rounded individuals with skills that will last far beyond graduation and benefit the community outside the walls of the school.
The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme at Omaha Central High School is an academically rigorous program that’s designed to give students a broader world view. Through challenging, international curriculum that emphasizes critical thinking and analysis, the IB Programme prepares students to be global-minded and civically active citizens.
Central High School has a long history of academic success with a wide offering of honors and Advanced Placement courses. What makes the IB Programme unique is that it’s a full two-year program for juniors and seniors in which students are required to take advanced IB classes for all areas of study – math, science, social studies, english, foreign language, and an elective. All students are also required to take Theory of Knowledge, which is a specialized course that teaches students to analyze information and apply knowledge in a meaningful way.
For students to be able to make high-level connections between a work of art and a mathematical formula – that’s IB.”
— Shane Thomas, Teacher, Central High School
One of the key components to the IB Programme is participating in lively class discussions. Students are encouraged to work together to find different perspectives on how to solve a problem and refine their process of examination. At the end of the two-year program, students are able to engage with people who have different opinions in a respectful, productive way.
Students in the IB Programme are no strangers to hard work or long days. In order to fulfill coursework requirements, IB students start their day with a zero hour class, which takes place before the regular school day starts. After the school day ends, many IB students participate in school sports or service activities, followed by study groups or individual homework time that lasts late into the evening. The heavy workload helps students to master their organization and time management skills.
