I Love Public Schools I Love Public Schools

I have always loved school, and the very best memories were the Friday before Christmas vacation started. My “country” cousins would have a wonderful program that included songs and a play at their one-room school and we were invited! How I longed to be a part of it, as “townies” had no such productions.

Years later, I was a teacher in a two-room school, 5R in Colfax County. As the music teacher, I was in charge and did I have a ball planning and directing a musical each year. Every year was different and magical. One of the best was about Santa’s elves putting on a show in Branson Missouri in order to raise funds for new equipment at the North Pole. The kids wore their parents’ cowboy boots and belt buckles and we belted out country songs like Reba and Willie! The dads built us a stage with lights and our students were stars! Today when I see those students with their own children, we still greet each other with lines from the play. One reason that I love Nebraska public schools!
