One of my favorite activities each year is when the kids share their “I AM Lewis & Clark” speeches. They use their drama skills to tell their stories and share their experiences. They work in groups to become the visual aides for one another through pantomime.
Kids are allowed to talk about anything they want. I have kids from two different sides of the conflict in Myanmar work together to tell each other’s stories. I have had kids from four different faiths talk about why they love their faith. I have had kids learn about each other’s passions for sports, for writing, and for science and all step into each other’s shoes.
I love public schools because we get the glorious opportunity to be an ensemble with people we may never have otherwise met. We come together to create something beautiful and it makes us all better for having had the experience.
