Teachers, along with community and parent volunteers set out curling irons and hair products each Monday morning before students arrive. The Books & Braids club at Howard Elementary was started by English language learners teacher Bianca Ayala and special education teacher LeighAnn Miller. It is open to all Howard Elementary students. The group allows students to come read books and get their hair styled. This gives them confidence throughout the day. Books & Braids also gives opportunities to teach about personal hygiene, while also promoting literacy.
